Microbial Ecology in Extreme Conditions, Costa Rica
$995.00 – $4,495.00
June 7 to June 15, 2024
Who Should Attend: The course is intended for science and environmental students, ecologists, technicians, and engineers.Description: The course describes the interrelations of microorganisms with extreme environmental with physical and chemical conditions and the biogeochemical cycles. It covers the effect of the abiotic factors on the microorganisms that thrive in extreme conditions (e. g. temperature, acidity, alkalinity, salinity, pressure, oxidation-reduction potential, oxygen variability, microorganism tolerance to toxic contamination of organic compounds and metals. Emphasis will be given to the response of metabolic cycles and novel bio-structure of macromolecules e. g. lipids and proteins. It includes comparative bioenergetics of microorganisms that inhabit extreme environmental conditions and the ecology and genetics (genes) that have enabled them to survive under these conditions. In addition, the course also includes a study of the use of these adapted microorganisms in environmental biotechnology and application to industries.
The experimental part includes the application of diverse techniques to understand the microbial diversity in volcanoes, dry forest, cloud forest, estuary, wetlands, and other ecosystems. The course describes the interrelations of microorganisms with abiotic factors and the biogeochemical cycles. Emphasis will be given to tolerance to organic and inorganic contamination, comparative bioenergetics of microorganisms that inhabit extreme environmental conditions and the ecology and genetics that have enabled them to survive under these extreme conditions.
