MIUS614: Virology II. The course offers an in-depth study of advanced topics in virology. This course examines both the smallest and largest DNA viruses that infect eukaryotic organisms, highlighting their unique structures and replication mechanisms. Students will also explore viruses that utilize reverse transcriptase enzymes, providing insight into how these viruses convert their RNA genomes into DNA during infection.  In addition to examining virions—the complete, infectious forms of viruses—this course addresses prions, which are infectious protein particles distinct from traditional viruses. The curriculum further delves into host defense mechanisms against viral infections, outlining how organisms detect and respond to viral threats. Antiviral agents are discussed, focusing on the strategies and substances used to inhibit viral replication and spread. Finally, the course covers virus vectors, examining how viruses are transmitted and the role of vectors in the spread of viral diseases. This comprehensive approach ensures that students gain a broad understanding of the complex interactions between viruses, their hosts, and the strategies used to control viral infections.
