An introduction to the discipline of bioinformatics, which combines concepts from computer and information sciences, mathematics, and statistics to manage and analyze the data that is generated from experiments in molecular biology. A comprehensive overview of the theories and tools most widely used in the field of bioinformatics today is provided. Discussion also covers the theoretical concepts behind the computational tools that are used with the goal of evaluating new tools as they become available. Emphasis is on hands-on experience. Topics include biological databases and the most efficient ways to query them, the analysis and manipulation of biological sequences, sequence alignment, phylogenetic analysis, protein structure prediction, proteomics, and gene expression array analysis.
