THSP750: Biomedical Instrumentation I. This course provides a comprehensive overview of the fundamental concepts and practical applications of biomedical instrumentation. Students are introduced to the basic principles underlying medical instrumentation and the essential technologies employed in modern healthcare settings.

The curriculum begins with the foundational aspects of medical instrumentation, detailing the purpose and operation of various devices used to monitor and diagnose physiological functions in patients.

A key component of the course is the study of bioelectric signals, including their origin, characteristics, and significance in medical diagnostics. The use of electrodes for detecting and measuring these signals is also examined, encompassing different electrode types and their applications.  The course explores physical transducers, devices that convert physiological events into measurable electrical signals. The principles of transduction and the selection of appropriate transducer types for specific biomedical applications are covered in detail.  Students gain insight into biomedical recording systems, focusing on the techniques and equipment used to capture, store, and analyze physiological data for clinical and research purposes.  The curriculum addresses patient monitoring systems, highlighting their role in continuous assessment of vital signs and critical parameters within clinical environments.  Specialized instruments for arrhythmia monitoring and fetal monitoring are discussed, with emphasis on their operation, clinical significance, and contribution to patient care. Finally, the course introduces biomedical telemetry and telemedicine, outlining the principles and technologies that enable remote monitoring and delivery of healthcare services.
